Australia basalt bluestone boulders build builder construction.
Aggregate, Crushed stone, gravel, or sand added to cement to make concrete. Ashlar, Cut, squared building stone finely dressed on all sides adjacent to other stones. Requires only very thin mortar joints. Random ashlar uses rectangular stones in discontinuous courses. Dressed stone. A stone masonry unit which has been squared and shaped for precise fit with other stones. Undressed stone has naturally rough and irregular shapes. Joint. The place where two masonry units meet, often bound together by mortar. Masonry, Construction method using units such as stone, brick, and concrete block which are usually joined with a binding agent such as mortar. Mortar is a mixture of lime and/or pulverized clay (cement) with very fine sand and water. Less often, the units are held in place by their own weight, especially with very large stones. Also includes concrete construction. Reinforced concrete. Concrete which gains added strength by placing wire mesh or rods into the formwork before the concrete it poured. Rubble. Rough, irregular stone fragments used in construction of a wall or wall surface.A random rubble wall has discontinuous courses and may include smaller garrets, small stones used to wedge larger ones into position or fill gaps. A coursed rubble wall is more organized and built to a level course at various intervals. A squared rubble wall is built of roughly squared stones of varying size which are brought to level courses every third of fourth stone. Rustication. Ashlar masonry having the visible surfaces raised or textured in contrast to the finely dressed joints. What is Perlite? Perlite is not a trade name but a generic term for naturally occurring siliceous volcanic rock. The distinguishing feature which sets perlite apart from other volcanic glasses is that when heated to a suitable point in its softening range, it expands four to twenty times its original volume. This expansion is due to the presence of two to six percent combined water in the crude perlite rock. When quickly heated to above 1600°F (870°C) the crude rock pops in a manner similar to popcorn as the combined water vaporizes and creates countless tiny bubbles in the heat softened glassy particles. It is these tiny glass-sealed bubbles which account for the amazing physical properties of expanded perlite. The expansion process also creates one of perlite's most distinguishing characteristics: its white color. While the crude rock may range from transparent to light gray to glossy black, the color of expanded perlite ranges from snowy white to grayish white. Expanded perlite can be manufactured to weigh from 2 lb/ft3 (32 kg/m3) to 15 lb/ft3 (240 kg/m3) making it adaptable to numerous applications in the construction, industrial, chemical, horticultural and petrochemical industries. A unique use for perlite is in the manufacture of fire resistant, lightweight, rot proof, simulated stone, masonry and wood products for a multitude of exterior and interior applications. What does the stonework reveal? The south wall gives information on the roof of the chamber, though not directly. Most crypts had stone vaulted roofs, which had to be bonded into the side walls. If that had been the case at Bradford, the south wall would show traces of it. Because only the bottoms of its wall survive, we can never know whether there were windows in the lower chamber. It is just possible that the footings of the south wall would show whether there had been a door, but it is unlikely that it would survive to the necessary height to reveal a cill. There could, possibly, have been a flight of steps running up the outside face of one of the walls, into a door in the wall of the upper chamber of the porticus, and if so, the footings for that could survive. It would involve a huge amount of rubble-shifting to test that fairly unlikely hypothesis, however. stonework, term applied to various types of work : that of the lapidary who shapes, cuts, and polishes gemstones or engraves them for seals and ornaments; of the jeweler or artisan who mounts or encrusts them in gold, silver, or other metal; of the stonemason who executes the plan of architect or engineer for wall, pier, vault, bridge, or dam; of the carver who chisels bas-relief, intaglio, or freestanding figure, using a pointing machine for accuracy; and of the printer at his imposing stone.
