What is Perlite? Perlite is not a trade name but a generic term for naturally occurring siliceous volcanic rock. The distinguishing feature which sets perlite apart from other volcanic glasses is that when heated to a suitable point in its softening range, it expands four to twenty times its original volume. This expansion is due to the presence of two to six percent combined water in the crude perlite rock. When quickly heated to above 1600°F (870°C) the crude rock pops in a manner similar to popcorn as the combined water vaporizes and creates countless tiny bubbles in the heat softened glassy particles. It is these tiny glass-sealed bubbles which account for the amazing physical properties of expanded perlite.

WHAT THE WALL REPRESENTS

The wall depicts Porcellinite in its natural form.

Porcellinite is unique to the Darwin Peninsula. It forms below coffee rock which acts as a sieve for the heavy wet season rains and forms a silt layered mud that becomes Porcellinite. Various minerals make for some unique colours in the stone.

This has occurred at places like East Point and Nightcliff in Darwin’s northern suburbs. Porcellinite forms the walls of Territory Heritage buildings like Government House and the Administrative Buildings in Darwin. The same Darwin Heritage style is a feature of Finlay’s Joint and Finlay’s Stonemasonry Office.

The Porcellinite statues in the Stickybeak Shop and around the property have been made at Finlay’s Stonemasonry.
